Four mini courses will be offered in two concurrent sessions. Each participant will be assigned into two courses on the basis of interests.
Multi-Culturalism and the Politics of Translation
We are accustomed to hearing of what gets lost in translation, but this course explores what is created. By shifting focus away from questions surrounding translation’s fidelity as a medium of representation and towards its production of the historically new, we will explore translation as a practice and as a way to think through historical contingency and difference. Important essays in translation theory and case studies drawn from my experience as a literary translator from Korean into English, and as a scholar of early twentieth century colonial culture in East Asia will help us to think about translation in the interstices of formations of colonialism and globalization.
Literature, Culture and Contact in Medieval Iberia
