Critical China Studies

Critical China Studies
[Renewal]

The Critical China Studies group aims at fostering intellectual conversations and exchange among the growing interdisciplinary community of China specialists both at the University of Toronto and the greater Toronto area. Our group draws faculty members and graduate students in departments and programs such as history, East Asian studies, art history, anthropology, media studies, comparative literature, geography, religion, sociology, drama, theatre, performance studies, and women and gender studies, among other. Our working group meetings are normally two-hour long, and papers and reading materials are usually pre-circulated to enable maximal preparation and fruitful discussion.
In the coming year, our goals will be to strive to nurture more dynamic graduate student participation by encouraging their presentation of research, conference papers, thesis proposals and chapters, and by facilitating in-depth communication on their presentations so that they receive feedback from peer students and faculty members; to expand our academic interests and disciplinary approaches by presenting scholarship focusing on cross-regional, inter-cultural, and transnational aspects of China studies; to complement our current strengths in the study of modern and contemporary China with research interests in pre-modern Chinese society and culture; to invite China scholars at institutions in neighbouring regions, such as McGill, Queen’s, McMaster, Western, Brock, and SUNY Buffalo, with the purpose of strengthening scholarly ties with these institutions; and, finally, to experiment with collaborations with other JHI working groups.
