Critical China Studies

Critical China Studies

This working group brings together faculty members and graduate students who use diverse methodological lenses and disciplinary tools, including history of science, gender studies, print and visual culture, art history, law, social theory, and postcolonial studies to study China. This organically-formed and experimental working group provides a common intellectual forum for participants in diverse fields to investigate historical, theoretical, and methodological issues relevant to China studies.

In addition to faculty members and graduate students from the University of Toronto, our group has also welcomed postdoctoral fellows and scholars from York University, Sir Wilfrid Laurier University, and Ryerson University.  We work closely with academic units at the University of Toronto to find opportunities to consult with outside scholars who are visiting Toronto, and in the coming year, we look forward to the 2012 Association of Asian Studies Annual Convention, which will be held in Toronto.

Our meetings normally take the format of pre-circulating a paper-in-progress, which members read and comment upon.  In the coming year, we will focus on the transnational dimensions of China studies, particularly in relationship to artistic and literary practices, colonialism and imperialism, revolutionary history and politics, and environment and ecology.
