(Un)Disciplining Islamic Studies

(Un) Disciplining Islamic Studies

This working group brings together a community of faculty members and graduate students at the University of Toronto who work on Islamic Studies across a variety of disciplines.  We have two goals for the coming year:

  • Foster a regular and ongoing discussion among faculty and graduate students about different disciplinary approaches to the study of Islam, and the research possibilities that arise from a comitment to interdisciplinarity;
  • Develop an application for a Connaught Summer Institute grant to host a graduate level training seminar for Summer 2012.

The workshop will meet monthly.  Each meeting will be led by a faculty member, and will centre around a classic reading that highlights a particular theoretical and/or methodological approach; these readings will be paired with a primary source (text, ethnographic description, field notes) that will offer a point of departure for addressing the implications and limitations of different theoretical frameworks and methodologies.  A final half-day session will be held in April 2012 in which graduate students will be invited to follow the same pattern of discussion.
