The Poetry of the Influence Machine:  On Translating One Self into Another

Where do poems come from? How do selves take shape? What goes into inspired translation? What is the place of danger, fiction, and delusion, sense and sensation, in the making of each? And do these questions have anything at all to do with one another?  MacArthur-winning poet and translator Peter Cole will explore these and other mysteries, as he presents a dramatic “case history of susceptibility” and in the process maps a “translational poetics.”  In this combined talk and reading, Cole will consider the role of translation as a primary force in our lives and in our literatures, as he also examines its place in the charged dynamic of illness, influence, and vital poetic tradition.

Peter Cole is the author of four books of poems, most recently Things on Which I’ve Stumbled (New Directions). His many volumes of translations from Hebrew and Arabic include The Poetry of Kabbalah: Mystical Verse from the Jewish Tradition (Yale) and The Dream of the Poem: Hebrew Poetry from Muslim and Christian Spain, 950-1492 (Princeton). Cole has received numerous honors for his work, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, the PEN Translation Award for Poetry, and an Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2007. He teaches at Yale.

This event is free and open to the public.  For further information, please contact Kim Yates at (416) 946-0313.
