Two-day workshop sponsored by the Centre for Ethics and the Society for Applied Philosophy

The Centre for Ethics and the Society for Applied Philosophy are pleased to present a workshop:

The Value of Equality

Few values are as fundamental to our moral and political thinking as equality. But while it is undisputed that equality is a value, there is much less agreement as to what that value exactly is. The proposed workshop will attempt to tackle that question. Many may agree that equality has an instrumental value. It is often said that a society of equals is more solidaristic, tolerant, and democratic, among other things. Equality, it has been shown by epidemiologists is even good for our health. (The more income is distributed equally in society, the higher the average life expectancy in that society). But does equality also have an intrinsic value? Is equality itself good, apart from whatever goods it might bring about? The answer to these questions will affect which pattern of distribution should be adopted. Is there something to recommend an equal distribution, or ought we simply give priority to worse off individuals, or concentrate on lifting them above a certain threshold of sufficiency? The workshop will attempt to tackle these and related questions.
