The complete collection of historical and political writings of Alessandro Manzoni was recently published in two volumes of 1600 pages total. There are included, with an in-depth commentary, the great historical works (Discorso sopra alcuni punti della storia longobardica in Italia, Storia della colonna infame, La rivoluzione francese del 1789 e la rivoluzione italiana del 1859, Dell’indipendenza dell’Italia), but also fragments, letters and marginal notes that have accompanied those works or that have initiated further historical investigations. Manzoni emerges as a writer profoundly interested to the social dimension of man, a master of method, a nonconformist intellectual. The curator of this new edition will present to us an author interested in dividing factitious unities and in defending and promoting, against “party spirit”, personal responsibility.

Luca Badini Confalonieri, after nearly twenty years as full professor of Italian Literature in French University (first at the University of Strasbourg and then at the University of Savoy), is now full professor of Italian Literature at the University of Torino, where he himself was a student, graduating under Giovanni Getto.  Amongst his books: Il cammino di madonna Oretta. Studi di letteratura italiana dal Due al Novecento (Alessandria, Edizioni dell'Orso, 2004), Les régions de l'aigle et autres études sur Manzoni  (Bern, Peter Lang, 2005), the new edition with commentary of Promessi sposi and Storia della colonna infame (Roma, Salerno Editrice, 2006, 2 vols.), and the two volumes edition of Manzoni’s Scritti storici e politici, in «Classici italiani» series of UTET (Torino, 2012). Still in preparation, about Manzoni, an edition with commentary of Lettre à Monsieur Ch[auvet] (for the new «Edizione Nazionale ed Europea»), and the full edition with commentary of Scritti filosofici e religiosi for the series "Il pensiero occidentale" by Bompiani.
