"State of Spirit": Poetics of counterinsurgency and war in Mozambique (1969-2015)

This paper examines contexts of violent conflict in Mozambique, which are predicated upon an opposition between segmentary local formations in the Center-North and successive centralized forms of state sovereignty (Sultanate, Portuguese colonial state, FRELIMO Socialist regime). The paper follows dialogic relations between words and things in situations of anti-colonial struggle (late 60's), civil war/ Cold War (1980's), and interruption of a neo-liberal-democratic regime (2013-2015), emphasizing the role of customary ethical norms and spiritual ritual.

This event is free and open to all. Registration is not required.
