War and Water: Sources of Urban and Regional Creativity and Growth

Abstract: Where do the creative ideas that power urban and regional growth come from? I argue that the big and enduring creative impulses are a response
to big problems, and that the biggest, most urgent problems are related to warfare and essential environmental services such as the provision of clean water. I will try to show that each of these is geographically differentiated and underwrites different trajectories of growth.

Erica Schoenberger, Johns Hopkins University

Sponsored by the Canada Research Chair in Innovation and Governance
