Beyond Language and Nation: Looking Again at French and England

Jocelyn Wogan-Browne (Fordham University)

This seminar uses recent thinking about the notion and practice of empire as one means towards moving away from nationalizing discourse as a default paradigm subtending literary-linguistic discussion. It will look at some short secondary readings on language and examples from late medieval texts (with accompanying translation) that might be seen in different ways as supra-regional. Reading material will be circulated to registered participants in advance.

We invite those currently affiliated with the Department of English or the Centre for Medieval Studies, including graduate students, course instructors, recent alumni, and postdoctoral fellows, to register for this exciting seminar.

To register, please e-mail Sarah Star (sarah.star@mail.utoronto.ca) no later than Monday, 4 April 2016. There will be a maximum of 20 available spaces.

For further information, please contact the Pontifical Institute for Mediaeval Studies at 416 926-7142.
