Talk by Karel Martens, Israel Institute of Technology

The University of Toronto Transportation Research Institute and the Institute on Municipal Finance and Governance at the Munk School of Global Affairs presents

Accessibility, Transportation Planning and Fairness

Professor Karel Martens will demonstrate the consequences of “the accessibility turn” arguing, first, that the assessment of accessibility is not merely an option, but a moral obligation for transportation authorities, and second, that the focus on accessibility inevitably requires these authorities to explicitly address questions of fairness.

Professor Martens is the Leona Chanin Career Development Chair at the Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning, Technion, Israel Institute of Technology and also holds an appointment at the Institute for Management Research, Raboud University, the Netherlands.

Following his talk,  Linda Weichel, Vice President, Initiatives, CivicAction, Monica Campbell, Director, Healthy Public Policy, Toronto Public Health and Professor Steven Farber, Department of Human Geography, University of Toronto Scarborough, will share their experience and perspectives on the importance and status of accessibility in the GTA.  Professor Enid Slack, Director of the Institute on Municipal Finance and Governance at the Munk School of Global Affairs will moderate what we hope will be very interesting presentations and an opportunity for discussion.

The event is free and open to all. Registation is required.
