Talk by Rebecca Shapiro (CUNY--New York City College of Technology, Department of English)

The Department of English and the LEME (Lexicons of Early Modern English) present:

Fixing Babel: a Dictionary Book in the Works

An informal talk by Professor Rebecca Shapiro (CUNY--New York City College of Technology, Department of English)

"My forthcoming book, Fixing Babel: A Historical Anthology, puts English dictionaries in historical, national, linguistic, literary and cultural context. The editorial apparatus presents lexicographical trends, identifies sources and biographies, and shows how authors apply ideas about capitalism, nationalism, sex, and social status in order to favor one language theory over another. The introduction is a major essay on the history of lexicography that concludes with a discussion of current and future trends. It provides a chronology of how and why dictionaries and pedagogical texts evolved into the reference books of today."

This event is free and open to all. Registration is not required. For further information, please contact the Department of English at (416) 978-3190
