Lecture by Claudio Magris

The Istituto Italiano di Cultura is pleased to present

Frontiers of Identity

by Claudio Magris

Moderated by John Zilcosky

The lecture by internationally renowned Italian author Claudio Magris represents his
synthesis of the manifestations of cultural identity in individuals and groups found in the
works of many European writers of the past decades. The theme of cultural identity,
prevalent in many countries that now belong to the European Union, is shown as a thread
that has run through European literature since the time of Nietzsche and Freud.
The significance of borders, such as borders between nations, genders, sexual orientation,
and social groups, will be examined. Linguistic borders in particular will be a central topic
of discussion. The multicultural Canadian experience, as interpreted in Europe, will also be
addressed in the lecture.

Free and opent to the public.
