Call for Papers For:

MEDUSA: University of Toronto Anthropology Graduate Students' Union Colloquium

Deadline: February 8, 2013

Anthropology Graduate Students' Union (AGSU) at the University of Toronto invites proposals for the 1st annual graduate student colloquium. For the first time, MEDUSA is open to graduate students across disciplines and institutions. The MEDUSA Colloquium will take place on Thursday, March 21st 2013 at the Department of Anthropology at the University of Toronto, St. George campus.

The theme of the colloquium this year is “Connection Across Boundaries.” This theme reflects the broad sub-disciplinary diversity within the Department of Anthropology at the University of Toronto. We hope to foster greater connections between and across these sub-disciplines and other disciplines.

We encourage the submission of high-quality graduate-student research on any topic, but most especially those which take a creative interpretation to both connection and boundaries, be they spatial, temporal or more ideological, as well as the use of creative, non-traditional presentation methods (for instance, incorporating visual and/or auditory media). We encourage submissions from the sub-disciplines of anthropology offered at the University of Toronto (archaeology, biological/physical anthropology, linguistic, socio-cultural and medical anthropology), as well as other disciplines working on relevant topics related to human evolution, culture, history, and society.

Colloquium Format:

We are accepting both panel presentation submissions as well as individual paper presentations. Individual papers will be grouped together into a relevant panel. Presentations will be 15 minutes in length, followed by discussion. A prize will be awarded to the best student paper, and pending funding, we hope to offer modest compensation for travel expenses. Such funds will be disbursed on a case-by-case basis, and are not guaranteed.

Submission Instructions:

For individual paper submissions, please submit an abstract of no more than 250 words to Kate Rice (kathleen.rice@mail.utoronto.ca) or Mathew Gagne (mathew.gagne@mail.utoronto.ca) by 8 February 2013. For panel submissions, please submit a proposal as well as the abstracts for each paper on the panel (maximum 4 papers). Submissions should also include the following information in the body of the email: presenters name, program (M.A, Ph.D.), year of study, research focus, university/department, complete address, telephone number, email address, title of paper, and audio-visual requirements. Visual media (for instance, photo essays or short documentary films) will be accommodated to the best of the organizers' ability.

If you are interested in being a discussant, please contact Kate or Mathew personally.
