022-2023 Colloquium Series with a talk by Dr. Munira Khayyat, a Professor
of Anthropology in the Department of Sociology, Egyptology and Anthropol
ogy (SEA) at The American University in Cairo.  Dr. Khayyat will give a ta
lk titled, 'A Landscape of War.' On her talk, Dr. Khayyat writes, 'What
worlds take root in war? This talk takes us to the southern border of Leb
anon where resistant ecologies thrive amid perennial gusts of war. In fron
tline villages, armed invasions, indiscriminate bombings, and scattered
landmines have become the conditions within which everyday life is waged.
Here, multi-species partnerships such as tobacco-farming and goat-herdin
g carry life through seasons of destruction. Neither green-tinged utopia n
or total devastation, these survival collectives make life possible withi
n an insistently deadly region. Sourcing an anthropology of war from where
it is lived decolonizes distant theories of war and brings to light creat
ive practices forged in the midst of ongoing devastation. War is a place w
here life must go on.'We hope you will join us for this important talk, w
hich takes place Friday, March 17th from 2-4 PM in AP 246 at the Departme
nt of Anthropology. Can't attend in person? Register to attend this talk vi
