Stolen Photo Film Screening

When and Where

Thursday, October 23, 2025 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm
Innis Town Hall
Innis College
2 Sussex Avenue, Toronto, ON M5S 1J5

Description

Stolen Photo traces how the United Fruit Company and the Colombian military used a studio portrait photograph to identify and kill leaders of the 1928 banana workers' strike. It moves between Colombian sites of memory and company archives at Harvard and here at the University of Toronto Mississauga, making visible how photographs and archives have been deployed to shape historical memory.

After the screening, Lina Britto (Northwestern), Fidel Peña (Creative Director, Underline Studio), and Kevin Coleman (University of Toronto) will discuss the making of the film and its intervention in debates about the 1928 massacre. Professor Luis van Isschot (University of Toronto) will moderate.

Contemporary relevance: In June 2024, Chiquita was ordered to pay $38M for funding paramilitaries in Colombia. The film has been used by Colombian journalists to contextualize this verdict.

Stolen Photo: 54 minutes, English/Spanish with English subtitles, written and directed by Kevin Coleman, coproduced by Señal Colombia/RTVC.
