Imagining the Indian Fund in an Age of Austerity with Brian Gettler

January 22, 2026 by Sonja Johnston

Presentation by Professor Brian Gettler (UTM Department of Historical Studies), a 6-month JHI Faculty Research Fellow in 2024-25. Part of our JHI Alumni Research Lecture Series.

In the mid-nineteenth century, the British Crown began holding funds in trust for First Nations in Ontario and Quebec. Collectively known as the Indian Fund, these monies arose from the lease and sale of Indigenous lands and natural resources while helping to fund settler institutions and infrastructure and the Indian Department’s acculturation program. This presentation explores the intellectual and policy origins of the Indian Fund as they developed from the 1800s through the 1820s.
