Spring Is for Scholars: The JHI Writing Retreat & the JHI SSHRC Grant Writing Bootcamp Are Back

March 31, 2026 by Sonja Johnston

This spring and summer, two JHI flagship programs return to support tri-campus faculty members in the humanities and qualitative social sciences: the JHI Writing Retreat (May 19-22 or May 25-28, 2026) and the JHI SSHRC Grant Writing Bootcamp (June 2-July 21, 2026).

Both form a key part of the JHI’s constellation of research programming supports, which include the “JHI How-to” Series, our New Faculty Salon, and targeted workshops on topics designed to support early career scholars, mid-career colleagues, and research recognition for faculty members at all levels.

The JHI SSHRC Grant Writing Bootcamp has a proven track record of funding success: the  success rates have increased exponentially from 36% of participants awarded funding in 2022, to 84% in 2024. Since our first bootcamp in 2022, participants have collectively been awarded $2.2 million in SSHRC funding. Results for the 2025 SSHRC Insight and Insight Development competitions are still pending.

The Writing Retreat has helped faculty jumpstart new projects and bring them to completion, from journal articles to monographs, and build lasting cross-disciplinary connections across the tri-campus.

These programs reflect the JHI’s ongoing commitment to meaningful and community-forward support for the humanities and social sciences community.

The calls for both programs are open now: the JHI Writing Retreat deadline to apply is Tuesday, April 28, 2026 and the JHI SSHRC Grant Writing Bootcamp deadline is Tuesday, May 5, 2026.

We hope you will join us again this year!
