Im/Migration, Mobilities, and Circulation
This working group brings together scholars who study immigration and plural nations, with scholars who study transnationalism and diasporic life to discuss the impact of the so-called “mobilities turn”--an emerging scholarly focus on movements of multiple kinds at multiple scales--on their scholarship. We will focus on how attention to mobility changes the ways we understand citizenship, belonging, and pluralism; compare migrations; write long-term world histories and large-scale, global studies of relationships among human movement and the circulation of goods, ideas and information; and engage with cultural and media studies of the circulating ideas, beliefs, and images.
In 2015-2016 we will read and discuss seminal, new, and cross-cutting publications; provide graduate student and faculty participants with a forum to share on-going research; host an invited speaker; and foster collaborative, interdisciplinary projects such as interdisciplinary scholarly panels, a 2017 Tri-campus conference, or a joint publication.
