Self-Reliance and/as Self-Determination: Third World Influences on Fourth World Anti-Colonialism
Join us for the three-day F.E.L. Priestley Memorial Lecture series, featuring Glen Coulthard, a Canadian scholar of Indigenous Studies and Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia.
This engaging lecture series presents Coulthard’s work on the political activities of a dedicated cadre of Native militants organizing (largely, but not exclusively) in the Northwest Territories and British Columbia from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. These lectures will explore the profound inspiration the Red Power advocates of this period drew from the decolonization struggles of the “Third World”, and how through the experiences of radicalized communities of colour abroad, Native militants at home came to conceptualize their own unique critiques of radical capitalism, patriarchy, and internal colonialism.
